Keeping may involve rearranging. When we were discussing plans with our builder, we stressed the importance of building storage into the design so we had room to keep items with sentimental value. We’re not able to display everything the way we did in the old house. Some items that were previously on display are now in cabinets.

Store

Whether you’re planning to rent a self-storage unit or store items in the basement, attic, garage, or shed of your new home, assign those items to the store category.

Reserve storage for items that you’ll probably use once or twice a year. If you can’t imagine using something or even looking at it for several years, you should probably get rid of it, regardless of how attached you are to it emotionally.

Don’t store items merely because you’re struggling to make the tough call to get rid of them. If it can’t pay rent, then you’re providing free housing to something that’s not offering you anything of value in return.
